We will present recent results on the evolution of very massive galaxies in the field and in dense environments (e.g. galaxy clusters), using recent data from the HST/CANDELS and COSMOS surveys. We will present the discovery of a significant overdensity of star forming galaxies at z~1.9 and its implication for early-type galaxy formation in clusters today. We will discuss what our results imply for future space missions, such as Euclid.
