Tidal stellar streams as probes of Gravity and Dark Matter

“Tidal stellar streams” have recently sparked burgeoning interest among the community. These structures, that are formed by the tidal disruption of globular clusters or satellite galaxies by the potential of the host galaxy, serve as “fossils” that encode information regarding the accretion history of our Galaxy. Recently, it has also been realized that streams provide exciting avenue to constrain the Milky Way’s gravitational potential and its dark matter distribution, can be useful in probing the very nature of the dark matter particle itself, and in testing various theories of gravity. The talk is intended to provide a short introduction on the scientific motivation to study stellar streams.
