A ceremony to honour the awarding of the Kavli Prize to Rodrigo Ibata, an astrophysicist and CNRS research director at the Strasbourg Astronomical Observatory (ObAS), was held at the Planetarium in the Jardin des Sciences at the University of Strasbourg on Tuesday 13 October 2026. The evening...
On scales of hundreds of millions of light-years, galaxies are distributed along a vast network of matter filaments known as the cosmic web. While it was already known that galaxies located near cosmic filaments are, on average, more massive and more frequently "quenched" in the present-day...
Rodrigo Ibata, Research Director at CNRS at the Strasbourg Observatory (Unistra/CNRS), receives the 2026 Kavli Prize in Astrophysics alongside Amina Helmi (University of Groningen) and Vasily Belokurov (University of Cambridge). Recognized for his study of debris from ancient galaxies, which...
An international team of researchers, led by Dr Paolo Bianchini (CNRS, Strasbourg Astronomical Observatory), has achieved a major breakthrough in our understanding of globular clusters—stellar systems almost as old as the Universe itself. Using state-of-the-art numerical simulations, the...
A team of astronomers led by Lucie Correia just brought a new perspective on galaxies in the millimeter–centimeter range with archival data, in a recent paper published in Astronomy and Astrophysics. The team has achieved a detailed characterization of how nearby galaxies emit light in the...

The astronomical observatory of Strasbourg (ObAS), in conjunction with the Interdisciplinary Thematic Institute IRMIA++ (Research in Mathematics, Interactions & Applications) of the Strasbourg University, is opening a post-doctoral fellowship position on any scientific topic covered by the...
An international team of astronomers, including Diana Ismail from Strasbourg astronomical observatory, has observed a galaxy in the early universe that is gravitationally lensed into the rare form of an “Einstein Cross”, including a central fifth image. Using observations from...
