The astronomical observatory of Strasbourg (ObAS), in conjunction with the Interdisciplinary Thematic Institute IRMIA++ (Research in Mathematics, Interactions & Applications) of the Strasbourg University, is opening a post-doctoral fellowship position on any scientific topic covered by the Observatory: stellar and star cluster populations, star formation, interstellar medium, high energy astrophysics including processes associated with compact objects and black holes and the exploitation of the SVOM mission, galactic archeology including exploitation of the Gaia mission, galaxy evolution and cosmology including the exploitation of the Euclid mission, and data science including data sharing and reuse.
The research project must have a strong interdisciplinary component involving applied mathematics (including computer science, machine learning or deep learning). The observatory fellow will conduct their own independent research, but is expected to interact with the local researchers from ObAS and whenever possible from IRMIA++.
Through local, national and multi-national institutions (including ESO, IRAM, ESA, CFHT, GENCI, PRACE, etc.), they will have access to prime observing and computing facilities. Support for research travel will be provided.
ObAS is located on the premises of Strasbourg University – one of the major universities in France – in historical buildings surrounded by a botanic garden, within walking distance from the city center. A total of about 100 people work at the observatory, including 30 permanent researchers. The Strasbourg observatory also hosts the Strasbourg astronomical Data Centre (CDS). CDS is dedicated to the collection and distribution of astronomical data and information, and the development of innovative techniques for scientific exploitation of large data sets. More information on the observatory, including the list of personnel, is available on our website.
Applicants must possess a Ph.D in astronomy or physics, which they need to have defended within the last 3 years, and must have demonstrated the ability to conduct fully independent research. The start date is flexible but is expected to be before October 2026. The contract is initially for one year, and may be extended up to 3 years.
Applications should be made with this on-line web form : select the call for projects “Post-doctoral position call” and then “Candidate-Astrophysics”. Deadline for applications is 2025 Nov 9.
At this stage, only names of two professional references are needed.
