The astronomical observatory of Strasbourg (Observatoire astronomique de Strasbourg, ObAS) is opening a post-doctoral (fellowship) position on any scientific topic covered by the laboratory: stellar and star cluster populations, high energy astrophysics including processes associated with compact objects and black holes, galactic archeology including exploitation of Gaia, galaxy evolution and cosmology, and data sharing.
ObAS is located on the premises of Strasbourg University – one of the major universities in France – in historical buildings surrounded by a botanic garden, within walking distance from the city center. A total of about 80 people work at the observatory, including 25 permanent researchers. Strasbourg observatory also hosts the Strasbourg Astronomical Data Centre (Centre de Données astronomiques de Strasbourg, CDS). CDS is dedicated to the collection and distribution of astronomical data and information, and the development of innovative techniques for scientific exploitation of large data sets.
The observatory fellow will conduct his/her own independent research, but is expected to interact with the local researchers. Contribution to the CDS activities is welcome (but not mandatory). Through local, national and multi-national institutions (including ESO, IRAM, ESA, CFHT, Genci, Prace, etc.), he/she will have access to the prime observing and computing facilities. Support for research and observing travel will be provided. More information on the observatory, including the list of personnel, is available at https://astro.unistra.fr .
Applicants must possess a Ph.D in astronomy or physics and must have demonstrated the ability to conduct fully independent research. The start date is flexible but is expected to be before autumn 2018. The contract is initially for two years, with possibility for a third year. The salary is set at € 2300-2800/month net depending on experience. Benefits include full access to the French healthcare system (medical, dental, maternity/paternity leave, etc.).
Applicants are requested to submit a CV, cover letter, statement of research interests, and the names of two professional references to directeur@astro.unistra.fr before November 15, 2017. Documents should be sent as PDF files via email with the subject line ObAS-fellowship.
