Applications are invited for a postdoctoral position in observational X-ray astronomy at Strasbourg Astronomical Observatory.
The Observatory is one of the member institutions of the XMM-Newton Survey Science Centre (SSC). Within the consortium the group in Strasbourg is responsible for the component of the automatic reduction pipeline that extracts archival information for all XMM-Newton fields and for providing software tools and specific databases aimed at easing the identification of EPIC sources. The group is also involved in future projects such as SVOM and Athena. The successful applicant is expected to participate in SSC activities and to collaborate with members of the institution.
The successful candidate is expected to focus his/her research work on the physics of the most powerful X-ray binaries and their environments in collaboration with Drs. R. Soria, M. Pakull and C. Motch. We are currently doing an X-ray/optical/radio study of a large, unbiased sample of galaxies in the Virgo cluster with the aim to discover and quantify the preferential locations of the most luminous X-ray binaries and to study their interaction with the ISM.
The position is funded by the Centre National d’Etudes Spatiales for one year and will normally be extended for a second year. Starting date might be as early as Feb 1.,2017.
