Resolved stellar spectroscopy presents us with “archaeological” evidence about chemical enrichment processes back to the earliest times. In this talk I will review the very early (chemical) evolution of the Milky Way. In particular, I will discuss our understanding of the origin of the peculiar abundance patterns in various subclasses of extremely metal-poor stars and the implications of these results for our understanding of the formation of both the Milky Way halo and the satellite dwarf galaxies therein. I conclude with an outlook into the upcoming results from our “Pristine” program on the Canada-France-Hawaii Telescope to study this intriguing epoch much more efficiently.
