The CDS is a data centre for reference astronomy data that is integrated into the Strasbourg astronomical observatory. CDS is labelled as a “Research Infrastructure” by the French Ministry of Higher Education, Research and Innovation (since 2008).
The CDS is also a “Service National d’Observation” (SNO) defined by the INSU Scientific advisory board, of type AA-ANO–5. The CDS is also a research team of the Strasbourg astronomical observatory.
- SIMBAD, the reference database for nomenclature and bibliography of astronomical objects (outside the solar system).
- VizieR, the reference service for astronomical catalogues and tables published in journals.
- Aladin, interactive sky atlas, image databases and portal to the Virtual Observatory.
- The CDS X-match service for cross-matching large astronomical catalogues.
The CDS is also one of the major contributors to the development of the international astronomical Virtual Observatory.
