The prize rewards Dominique Aubert and Pierre Ocvirk, from Strasbourg University, and their team, for their project “Galaxies and reionization simulations using hybrid computing”. The software developed within this project is optimized to exploit new hybrid computing architectures, for instance using GPUs (Graphics Processing Units), as accelerators. This approach allows the team to simulate the first billion years of the universe, and in particular, the formation of the first massive objects such as galaxies during the epoch of reionization. It is already being used on a very large scale on some of the most powerful supercomputers in the world.
