“FAIR & open data publication at CDS — focusing on VizieR”
VizieR is one of the three main CDS services, along with SIMBAD and
Aladin which complement each other. It provides the most complete
library of published astronomical catalogs –currently ~25,200– with
verified and enriched data, accessible via multiple interfaces. I will
show how VizieR is a good example to talk about FAIR (Findable,
Accessible, Interoperable, Reusable) data and why FAIR data is important
for giving visibility to astronomers’ data. To enrich your personal
curiosity, I’ll show you how data is processed by in-house
documentalists and why ingesting tables from astronomical journals is
not automatic in VizieR. I’ll finish with a recent article published in
the Astrophysical Journal on “The Best Practices for Data Publication in
the Astronomical Literature” that details precisely the issues faced by
data centers. Finally, if you’re lucky, you’ll be offered a short
demonstration of the Jupyter Notebook, which is automatically generated
for each VizieR catalog and can be customized as you wish.
