Content of the teaching

Second year master degree - Parcours Astrophysics

Teaching is split in unités d'enseignement (UE) that contain more than one subject. The distribution of teaching hours assigned to each subject is given here as an indication, personal study time must be added for a better estimate of the workload.


Lectures are in English.



    First term M2 (a.k.a. "M2-S3")

    Common Core Subjects

    • UE 1 : Astrophysics  (12 ECTS)
      • Introduction to astrophysics (12h)
      • Stellar Physics (16h)
      • Interstellar medium (10h)
      • Galaxies (22h)
      • Cosmology (16h)
    • UE 2 : data analysis
      • Statistics and probability (20h)
      • Data bases and virtual observatories (20h + projet)
    • UE 3 : Numerical physics and astrophysical medium modeling
      • Introduction to Python Programming (26h + projet)
      • Plasmas and MHD (20h)
      • Numerical simulations (30h, projet)

    Options

    • UE 4a : High energy astrophysics (20h)
    • UE 4b : Galaxy evolution (20h)
    • UE 4c : Inverse methods and advanced data analysis (20h)
    • UE 4d : Disques circum-stellaires et exoplanetes (partnership UGA Grenoble, Lecture in French; 20h)
    • UE 4e : Telescope and instrumentation / Solar physics (partnership KIS, Freibourg; 20h)

    Second term M2 (a.k.a. "M2-S4")

    • UE 1 : Initiation to astronomical observations and data analysis  (1 week at Observatoire de Haute Provence; team project joint with an other French M2). Data acquisition and analysis project on the 2xT36 (4h+ group project). Bibliographical project (1h + personal work).
    • UE 2 : Research internship in astrophysics or  adjacent domains(15 weeks).
